Advent Reading: The Book of Luke

This Advent season is a bit different. Maybe you feel more overwhelmed by remote learning, working from home, canceled plans or maybe with so many canceled activities you have been able to add new traditions or activities in your homes to prepare for Christmas.

For our family, we are doing more in our home than ever before as so many of our regular Christmas traditions have been postponed this year. But I still found myself on December 1st, at the end of my Bible study for the semester and wondering what I would read through this Advent season.

 I was flipping through stories on Instagram and came across a friend suggesting to read the book of Luke this Advent season. Luke's 24 chapters are perfect to spend time slowly reading through one a day, and Luke has beautiful details of the Christmas story. Each Sunday during December Crossroads is reading a portion of Luke 1 and 2.

I love this declaration of praise from Mary (The Magnificat) in Luke 1 that Pastor Mark read this Sunday:

“My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.
For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
And his mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;
he has brought down the mighty from their thrones
and exalted those of humble estate;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”

If you have come to this point in Advent and are feeling maxed out or have not been in God's Word much this month, I want to encourage you to join me in reading the Gospel of Luke. Let your time start with this song that echos Mary's words and worship Him.
